Osurnia® Otic Gel

Osurnia® Otic Gel is a prescription medication for the treatment of otitis externa (external ear infection) in dogs, manufactured by Dechra. Its innovative gel formulation is easy to administer like a liquid but quickly forms a long-lasting gel film that adheres firmly to the ear canal. The treatment protocol is highly convenient—only two doses administered 7 days apart—while providing therapeutic activity for up to 45 days.

Key Features and Unique Mechanism of Osurnia

• Adheres deeply and lasts: Upon application, the medication dissolves into the earwax and spreads to coat the entire outer ear canal. It does not easily leak out and is gradually eliminated through the dog's natural ear-cleaning process.
  
• No need for daily application: Ideal for owners who find daily administration inconvenient, or for dogs that struggle, try to escape, or become aggressive when forced to undergo routine ear cleaning and medicating.
• Reduces the risk of drug resistance: Administration of just two doses by a veterinarian ensures the dog receives the full course of treatment as planned.

Most Important Precautions and Contraindications

• Eardrum Check Required Before Use: This is a specially controlled medication that must be prescribed and administered solely by a veterinarian. The veterinarian must perform an otoscopic examination to confirm that the eardrum is intact (i.e., there is no tympanic rupture). Use of this medication is strictly prohibited if the eardrum is ruptured, as it may cause inner ear toxicity, potentially leading to deafness or facial paralysis.
• Do not clean the ears after application: Once the veterinarian has administered the Osurnia gel, the owner must strictly avoid using any ear cleaning solutions, wiping the ears, or bathing the dog in a way that allows water to enter the ears throughout the treatment period; this is to prevent the medication from being washed away.
• Caution regarding eye contact: Since dogs often shake their heads vigorously after the medication is administered, owners and veterinarians must take care to prevent the gel from splashing into the eyes, as this could cause moderate eye irritation or corneal ulcers.
• Storage instructions: This medication must always be stored in a refrigerator (at a temperature of 2°C – 8°C).
